Carole P. Roman | The Children’s Book Review
Two years ago, I was contacted by a publisher to write a joke book. It was to contain 800 diverse kinds of jokes and to supply silly statics or fun facts. While I was excited about compiling interesting data to tickle children’s interests, I was luke-warm with the idea of an entire book of jokes.
As I buried myself in riddles, one-liners, and knock-knock jokes, I tested them out on my grandchildren. I have two boys and two girls, ages 11, 9, 7, and 5, so it was quite an age span. I was never more surprised with their delight and cries of one more, please. I’ve read my share of books to them until I knew each page by heart, but watching their faces brought a new level to the notion of reading as pure entertainment. It made me realize this was an important book to add to my resume. Joke books should be part of every child’s library, and here are five reasons why.
- The most apparent reason is a joke book is perfect for the reluctant reader. Many parents have shared how their child has sat for hours reading and reciting jokes. As they enjoy the corny stories and punchlines, they don’t even realize they are practicing their reading.
- Practicing reading is a gateway to comprehension. While some jokes are self-explanatory, many are not. They require further investigation. That’s where the silly stats usually come in—I use them to expand a subject a child may not understand.
- Performance is key! A joke book is more fun when the humor is shared. My nephew took the book on a long car ride and called to say his three children were entertained for 200 blissful miles. They took turns telling jokes. It helped them communicate, work on their delivery, exchange ideas, and kept the confined space in the car peaceful. Telling jokes is engaging and a great way to hone social skills.
- Jokes can be timeless. They work for all age groups and genders, and they can entertain a diverse group. I tested many of my knock-knock jokes on adults working in an office. They laughed as hard as the children.
- Don’t forget humor is the best medicine. You can’t stay sad or lonely if you are giggling.
