Mama Goes to Work
Conquering separation anxiety from a parent is a right-of-passage for both children and their parents. Mama Goes to Work is about a spunky sheep named Shelly that is forced to deal with separation anxiety when Mama starts a new job. Shelly starts preschool at the same time and is not one bit happy about the changes. She can’t imagine being away from Mama, and she can’t imagine why Mama would leave her. Mama Goes to Work explains why moms work in terms children can understand. Mama also explains that in preschool Shelly will get to play with other kids her age, do fun activities such as painting, and learn exciting things like how to count in Spanish and say the Pledge of Allegiance. Shelly reluctantly agrees to give preschool a chance. In the end Shelly meets new friends and has a grand time in preschool.
Christy Ulbrich wrote the book based on her own experience getting back into the workforce and enrolling her daughter in daycare. Christy worried how her daughter would adjust to the separation since her daughter was accustomed to receiving her undivided attention. Everyone knows a child’s anxiety in turn causes anxiety for the parent. Therefore, helping the child deal with the change also helps the parent.
Mama Goes to Work shows children that moms have work responsibilities in addition to taking care of them. The book also shows children that their parents still love them when they are separated. Mama Goes to Work demonstrates that children can be independent from a parent and that they can even have fun when they’re not with a parent. The warm colors and cute illustration details hold children’s attention and keep the tone light.
