Two fathers came together to discuss a common problem, neither of them were happy with the selection of children’s books they were reading to their young children. The two fathers are brothers and formed a writing partnership to write the kinds of stories they wanted for their children. They discussed family values, sharing within the family, the roles of parents and the roles of the children and what they felt was important for the children to learn using books to start discussions and lead to high order thinking skills and problem solving. The writing partnership has written, illustrated and published Leo-Superhero: A Sunday Morning Adventure about an ordinary boy doing extra ordinary feats that any child can relate to and offers many values to discuss with children as your read the book to your child.
Leo, the Superhero was an ordinary boy, with a costume made by his mother, that helped an animal with the assistance of another animal, the cat. In the story the cat helps the mouse and the role reversal of the cat was intentional to show children that they need to think and not accept stereotyping in life. The boy problem-solves how to get the mouse back to his family and is kind and gives the mice food (outside) to show the child an example of being considerate.
The best part about the concepts behind the book are things that any child can relate to and do in everyday life, as Leo as he does ordinary things to accomplish all his good deeds. Leo shows independence, consideration, compassion, he investigates a problem, considering several possible solutions, and then solves problem using logic in the story. All of these skills are important for children to learn to be successful in school and life.
