What to expect: Pirates, Friendship, Bullying, Respect
Here’s a title with dual meaning—no spoilers here though. We all know that pirates and their crew can be a little bit cranky at times. In this newest Captain No Beard story, we find the crew aboard the Flying Dragon next to a deserted island—they are hot, thirsty and quite cranky. After the newest member of the crew, Matie the goat, drinks a double portion of juice, a game of blame begins and the gang becomes divided into those that like Matie and those that don’t. Teasing occurs and members are asked to pick sides. Hallie, who originally brought Matie aboard, does a nice job standing up for her and not succumbing to the bullying. Captain No Beard takes charge and helps each of the crew to identify with their strengths and weaknesses and helps them realize that nobody is perfect and everyone deserves respect. When the crew understands this valuable lesson of friendship, a round of apologies ensues, and it turns out that Matie knows just how to solve the original issue of thirst.
Just like all of the Captain No Beard stories, The Crew Goes Coconuts is super kid-‐ friendly with bright illustrations. It contains all of the familiar and favorite characters of books past, plus the introduction of Matie the goat, and fans of the series will enjoy boarding the Flying Dragon once again with all of their old friends. New comers to the series will appreciate award-‐winning author Carole P. Roman’s easy-‐breezy storytelling style—and it’s quite possible these new young readers (and those being read to) will go completely coconuts for the entire series.
