What to expect: Trees, nature, emotions
In The First Ñañarito on Earth/El Primer Ñañarito en la Tierra, readers are introduced to a beautiful, flourishing tree named Cholo that lives on an island in the Caribbean. This tree is different from all the other trees on the island—he is funny, witty and always positive. He is beloved and treasured but for some reason, he doesn’t always feel like he belongs.
Cholo feels different from all the trees because he doesn’t want to be rooted to one spot. He’d like to travel and explore the world, which is difficult to do given that he’s a tree. Despite this, Cholo still encourages all his friends to follow their dreams and he maintains his positivity and joy of living. As time passes, Cholo starts to lose his leaves and his branches become dry and brittle. He realizes that his time on Earth is coming to an end. A surprise visit from a strange creature—a Ñañarito—gives Cholo a new perspective and a new lease on life.
This clever story is told in both English and Spanish and the side-by-side translations make this a great book for bilingual readers or those that are learning English or Spanish. The illustrations are colorful and reassuring and the Ñañaritos will spark feelings of joy and wonder in younger readers.
The First Ñañarito on Earth/El Primer Ñañarito en la Tierra is sure to be a welcome addition to any library for dual-language learners.
