Falling asleep can feel stressful at times, especially when the mind begins to overthink. A Flock of Fun takes this stress away by poking fun and creating a lighthearted view of the situation. Whipped together with bouncy rhyme, award-winning poet Raven Howell, in conjunction with illustrator David Barrow, brings humorous life to the age-old adage of counting sheep.
The moon is shining brightly, and a young boy lies in his bed awake—the brightness of the moon keeps him awake. He decides to count sheep. However, he soon discovers that the sheep are entirely too noisy and energetic—they dump his toys, dive in his laundry, and play games wearing his underpants.
“They read my books out loud for fun—
“Sheep in a Jeep,” their favorite one.”
With his room now a giant mess, he decides that it might be best to count snails. The following evening, when he chooses to tally snails, he quickly discovers that it might be best to reckon the “noisy laundry-diving sheep” after all.
“Until the snails began to snore
Sleeping seemed to be a chore.”
The illustrations add comical life with the adorable little lambs (especially the ones in underpants) and the snails with their slimy trails covering the walls and his bed. The purply hues are just right for conveying the brightness of the night created by the glowing moon.
This picture book is a fun choice for a stress-free bedtime story! All readers, young and old, will surely relate to the young boy’s restless night of sleep.
