What to Expect: Healthy eating habits, interplanetary travel, pets.
Captain Fantastic and his faithful dog Winston are hungry, but there is nothing to eat aboard the Zippity-Zap. What will they do? Captain Fantastic has a wonderful idea: they can visit the chocolate planet! This marvelous world is bursting with treats, from candy-floss birds to a jelly jungle and fudge forest. Captain Fantastic and Winston eat until they can eat no more, and they soon begin to feel… well, a little bit ill. Even worse, they can’t fit back inside the Zippity-Zap! It is only after some strenuous exercise that the Captain and Winston begin to feel healthy and fit again. They’ve learned their lesson: candy is not a good meal—it should be enjoyed in moderation!
The idea of a candy wonderland is prevalent in children’s culture, from Willy Wonka’s fantastical chocolate factory to games like Candy Land and Candy Crush Saga. However, as magical as such wonderlands may seem, in real life, childhood addiction to candy brings with it serious repercussions for children with increasingly ready access, from diabetes to childhood obesity. Captain Fantastic is a bit different—with punchy rhymes and colorful, fun illustrations, this picture book acknowledges and indulges in the irresistible nature of candy while also reminding readers of the immediate downsides of overindulging. (Diabetes may be a vague and abstract possibility for most children, but nearly all can relate to the sick feeling too much chocolate brings on.) This volume is a fun and gentle way to introduce readers to the concepts of moderation and healthy eating.
