What to expect: Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs
Natasha Durley has created fantastic, vibrant images for this book that offers a close look at many, many dinosaurs. Organized around themes like “Humongous Horns,” “Terrifying Teeth,” and Noble Necks,” young dinosaur fans will love seeing and focusing on the strange and delightful physical features of their favorite creatures. Thanks to the fabulous illustrations and the book’s unique organization, Creature Features offers a unique take on the much-beloved dinosaur books.
Children can learn about the long-necked Euhelopus, the spiney Dacentrurus, and the creepily clawed Baryonyx. Surrounding the illustrations is information about the particular dinosaur focused on within that two-page spread, “Like whales today, many prehistoric animals had flippers they used to paddle and steer through the water,” giving context and conversation starters during reading time.
Children love dinosaurs because they are both fantastical and real—they were once here, on the earth—and this book does a great job of capturing this combination of the fantastical and real. Durley’s illustrations pop with color and life, and the focus on a single feature at a time promotes a kind of taxonomy of the animals, lending them a dash of realism and studiousness.
Definitely an excellent book for dinosaur lovers, and the artwork itself is very much enjoyable for its own sake, too.
