What to Expect: Magic, quests, self-belief, growth mindset, courage
In this humble, compelling fairy tale, readers can learn how a growth mindset works in the real world to turn big problems and challenges into achievable steps.
Rowan feels defeated and hopeless that she can’t swim as far as her brother. However, when her dreams transport her to a magical kingdom, Rowan discovers something even more daunting than swimming: now she’s being asked to rescue enchanted gold from a fierce dragon! The road is long and hard, the horse refuses to let her ride it, and the dragon follows, taunting and mocking her. Rowan is sure she’s going to fail at this too. Luckily, the Wise Wizard and a helpful fairy remind her of something very important: “every step forward is a little victory” (p. 20). Rowan defeats the dragon and her self-doubt one small step at a time!
Rowan’s dilemma is one familiar to most children, so readers will empathize with her doubts while the story models how her change of perspective helps her reach her goals. The book uses simple, modern language to keep the message accessible (and the tale humorous), while colorful, blocky illustrations help readers recognize their own world and challenges hidden in the fantasy setting.
Rowan and the Road to Yet is an easy and enjoyable way to teach young readers the concept of a growth mindset.
