What to Expect: Dogs, Family, American History, the White House
Wrigley the puppy lives in an extraordinary home—the White House, home to the President of the United States of America—this doesn’t stop him from being as mischievous as any other puppy, though! When he first comes home to live with the President’s twins, Wrigley runs through the house, causing mayhem. He tips up the flower cart in the State Dining Room. He steals the gift intended for a visiting royal couple, leading the secret service and military on a frantic romp through the Red Room, the Rose Garden, and finally to the Oval Office, where he presents his master with the stolen book. Everything ends happily for this First Pup!
Whether you are an ordinary family or the first family in the land, a puppy is a wonderful, life-changing addition to any home. As they follow Wrigley in his dash around the White House, readers will not only laugh at the puppy’s innocent mischief but will also learn more about the historic and history-filled building that serves as a home and workplace for one of the most powerful individuals in the world, drawn from the author’s first-hand knowledge of working in the building.
Susan Spellman’s colorful illustrations serve as a tour guide, escorting readers through the house in search of Wrigley while presenting key features, such as the portrait of Abraham Lincoln. A facts page at the end of the book introduces readers to some real-life dogs who have shared the White House with first families.
Wrigley at the White House—the first book in what promises to be an enjoyable series—is an entertaining way to learn about White House history (particularly for dog lovers).
