What to Expect: Family, seaside, tradition, nature, remembrance
Treasures of the Tide is a gentle, tender exploration of remembrance for loved ones who have left us.
Gus loves Sundays (and having pancakes for breakfast) because Sundays are when Pops, his grandfather, takes him and his sister to the seaside to hunt for seashells. The shells are beautiful and unique, but that’s not the only reason Gus loves them. Each shell, so unique in its own way, reminds Guy of the people he loves and the magic of nature. Most importantly, they remind him of the happy times he spent with his Daddy, collecting shells on the beach before Daddy passed away. Even though Gus is sad about Daddy, the shells remind him that Daddy is never very far away—he lives on in their memories!
The story invites readers to focus not on the negatives of loss but on the beauty and comfort that can come from shared spaces, traditions, and memories. Through Gus’s perspective, the story also models healing ways of thinking through grief and positive emotional responses like gratitude. More than anything else, this story is about the power of mindset and perspective, told through simple language and beautiful, softly colored watercolor illustrations.
Treasures of the Tide is a heart-warming, life-affirming story for teaching young readers about loss and remembrance.
