Floyd and the Irresistible Cookie
by Kristine Daniels (author/illustrator)
Reading Level: Ages 4-8
Paperback: 32 pages
Publisher: Dog Ear Publishing, LLC (2009)
Author and illustrator Kristine Daniels captures the feelings of holiday excitement and anticipation in her children’s picture book Floyd and the Irresistible Cookie. This book is one that children will want to read not just on Christmas Eve, but throughout the entire holiday season.
The story unfolds when a beautiful and delicious snowflake-shaped cookie becomes an ornament on the family Christmas tree. Floyd, a very persistent and hungry dog, desperately wants this cookie for a snack. He tries to capture the “Irresistible Cookie” in every way that he can imagine with the help of his canine companions, Larue and Tiny. Floyd is resourceful, crafty and determined, but is he successful?
Recommended for ages 4 to 8, the illustrations are richly colored with thoughtful and intricate details that capture the interest of older readers as well. The main characters, which are based on the author/illustrator’s own Welsh corgis, are endearing, humorous and expressive as they collaborate on Floyd’s cookie-capturing plans. The story is written from the view point of the animals, giving the dogs humanistic thoughts and emotions to which children can relate. Without being didactic, a subtle point is made when Floyd realizes that sharing can be nicer than having something only to himself.
Floyd and the Irresistible Cookie is appealing to both boys and girls and is an excellent addition to any family’s holiday story library. It is available on line through Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble.com. For more information, visit the author’s web site at www.kristinedaniels.net.
