The Children’s Book Review | October 15, 2017
Frogs that hop and dolphins that leap, babies that hatch and babies that hibernate, the variety in nature is endlessly fascinating. If you enjoy the Animal Bites series from Animal Planet, then you are sure to enjoy these two new additions to the series by Dorothea DePrisco; Baby Animals and Animals on the Move help young readers delve deeper in the diversity of the wild.
Baby Animals and Animals on the Move are two more beautiful additions to the Animal Bites series, which takes young readers for a walk through many different natural habitats and introduces them to the extraordinary diversity of wildlife on our planet. Broader in scope than some of the other books in the series, such as Farm Animals and Ocean Animals, these two books focus instead on the wide variety of different habitats, habits, behaviors, and characteristics of a wide range of different animals. Baby Animals demonstrates the different ways in which animals produce and rear their young, while Animals on the Move portrays the complexity of anatomical and physiological structures across different species that contribute to the different movements of animals from birds, to kangaroos, to turtles.
Like all the books in the Animal Bites series, beautiful photographs combine close-ups, action shots, wonderful still-life scenes, and portraits, allowing readers to examine these animals in great detail and from many different perspectives. By focusing on both familiar and more exotic animals, both volumes are easily accessible to beginner readers who might otherwise struggle with the wealth of information these books hold. Key vocabulary is highlighted and defined for readers, helping to build literacy skills at the same time as ecological awareness. Finally, both volumes conclude with a list of activities and further references, encouraging readers to engage and to learn more on their own.
I am definitely a fan of the Animal Bites series, and these books definitely live up to the expected standard!
