What to Expect: Music, summer love, school, friendship
Volume 22 in the much-loved Big Nate comic book series, Big Nate: Blow the Roof Off! is packed full of dead-pan junior-high humor.
Big Nate is back—and this year, he and Enslave the Mollusc are playing at the P.S. 38 annual open house. However, not everyone thinks Big Nate is so big. Trudy, the girl Nate met at the fair, fell in love with, and then lost, turns out to be the new kid at P.S. 38, and unfortunately for Nate, she’s a seventh grader. She’s not so keen on hanging out with a mere sixth grader, even if he is the drummer of the soon-to-be coolest rock band in the school.
Then things go from bad to worse: Principal Nichols has Musak in mind for the open house, not Pink Floyd. As the school year rolls on, will Nate be able to maintain his usual rock ‘n’ roll cool?
Nate and his friends are believable, sympathetic characters whose misadventures are sure to be reassuringly familiar. Snappy dialogue pairs with traditional Sunday papers comic-book illustrations to deliver a read that is light, entertaining, and just a little bit thought-provoking, encouraging readers to reflect on the relationships that shape school life. Best of all, the story ends on the usual note of optimism characteristic of the series, reminding readers that despite the drama, things usually work out okay in the end.
Big Nate: Blow the Roof Off is a fun read, perfect for existing and new fans alike.
