What to Expect: Greek Mythology, Magic, Adventure, History, Travel, and Family.
Following on from the action-packed Mayan Adventure and City of Bones, Shield of Athena continues this roller-coaster adventure with Bubba and Squirt testing and expanding into their courage, intelligence, and ability to work together.
Bubba and Squirt’s father has been kidnapped, and to get him back, the siblings must defeat the terrifying Gargoyle demon Kanaima. Thankfully, Bubba is a magician with a magic shovel that can create portals to anywhere. He also has a magician Grandpa with a knack for finding inspiration. This time, he finds it at the local Greek festival, where the kids learn about Athena’s shield—a magical object that can turn enemies into stone. They dig a portal and end up in Greece, where they’ll have to muddle their way through riddles, puzzles, and yet more museum robberies. Then it’s time to meet Athena herself—but will she be willing to let Bubba and Squirt use her shield?
Bubba and Squirt are a dynamic pair of main characters, and a real strength of the series is that readers get to watch them grow, learn, and develop. Like the previous books in the series, the story is as much an education in Greek culture, history, and mythology as a fantasy adventure. A reading list, glossary, and recipes for Baklava and Keftedes at the end of the book help readers take their learning beyond the pages of the story.
Shield of Athena is an exciting adventure with lots to teach readers, perfect for the middle-grade classroom.
