Bianca Schulze is the founder and editor of The Children’s Book Review—a resource devoted to children’s literature and literacy—and the host of The Growing Readers Podcast.

A neighbor cat turned up at the craziest times!
My dogs always know when I’m not feeling well & they comfort me
As I am writing this, one cat is bumping my hand, causing me to make corrections due to his “help”. Another cat is head-butting our sleeping dog, asking for attention. A third cat is sleeping in the best chair in the living room. Their brother is napping in another room; from past experience I know he will be hollering for me in a few minutes, when he wakes up and discovers he is alone. Their mother is happily snoozing in the bedroom while my partner reads; she hates her babies and wants nothing to do with them. Each of our cats displays “catitude” every day. This book belongs in our house. 😹

My dogs comfort me when I’m sad
I’m remembering the time we had an out-of-town guest and were getting ready to leave for a special dinner and realized that our indoor-only cat was missing. We called and searched and scoured the house and could not find her. I was frantic! We lived in a neighborhood where coyotes had been seen in the early morning hours, so just “letting her come home when she is ready” was not an effective solution. I felt embarrassed about holding up dinner, but felt a greater responsibility to our little cat…who was napping in our linen closet, behind a huge stack of towels, which is why we had not seen her when we had checked that very closet, several times. Naughty, naughty, unrepentant girl.
This is a good book with an important lesson.
