by Linda Newbery (Author), Catherine Rayner (Illustrator)
Reading level: 0 – 6 (and adult cat lovers)
Hardcover: 32 pages
Publisher: Atheneum (December 23, 2008)
The masterful simplicity of this charming picture book makes it perfect for a read-aloud story time for the very young. The essence of Posy the kitten’s playful and naive energy is delivered with true artistry by both author and illustrator. The illustrations are astutely earthy with frolicsome splashes of color – really appealing to the eye. The rhyming text dances through the pages with such gaiety that when you get to the end you’ll want to go right back to the beginning. I enjoyed this book very much.
by Matthew Van Fleet (Author), Brian Stanton (Photographer)
Reading level: Ages 2 – 6 (and adult cat lovers)
Hardcover: 20 pages
Publisher: Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books (February 10, 2009)
Matthew Van Fleet is an expert at creating interactive touch-and-feel books. In this innovative cat book you can swat at a goldfish, wag a tail, squeak a ball, play hide-the-cat, and even pat a cat. The easy narrative gives us descriptive words to match the sensory delights that are provided in this book. The cast of cats are displayed as portraits at the end of the book – what a kooky bunch – and definitely provide a good giggle. Scary cat (a.k.a Charlotte the Sphynx) has a look that is priceless.
If you are not familiar with Matthew Van Fleet’s work please check out some of his other work. My favorites: Tails and Alphabet.

Meow! If you want to learn some interesting facts about cats, then this might be what you are after. You may just want to learn how to say meow in Japanese – nyan, nyaa. Or perhaps learning about all the superstitions that circulate about cats – do nine lives and black cat/bad luck come to mind? This book is sure to have something for everyone. Visually it’s ingenious, each page has a wonderful cat illustration which has been made with found objects. An artsy take on a factual book.
“If you dream of a multicolored cat, you will have luck making friends.“
