What to Expect: Friendship, summer camp, pen-pals, gifts.
Chipper and his friends live in the Arctic but escape the cold and snow by traveling South for Summer Camp! They all have a blast at the camp, making new friends and trying out exciting new activities. When the time comes to go home, they vow to stay in touch with their new friends and keep the relationships strong until they can meet again. Their first attempts to send gifts go horribly wrong—flowers rot, snow melts, and seashells fall out of the box. Still, they persevere, and they soon get the hang of it. Their letters and gifts forge lasting friendships despite the many miles and months that separate them!
Especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many children in today’s world are finding themselves coping with long-distance relationships, whether with family or friends. This cheerful picture book introduces the old-fashioned idea of having pen pals and communicating via handwritten letters and hand-made gifts. The story shows how special such communications can be compared to fast and impersonal emails and texts, inviting readers to think about the joy of waiting for and receiving something special. Beautiful and lively colored pencil and watercolor illustrations bring the story to life, while simple rhyming text keeps the story accessible to beginner readers.
Chipper Sends Sunshine is a great way to teach young readers about letter writing, pen-pals, and building long-distance relationships. A fun choice for summer and post-summer reading!
