What to expect: Internet and Smart Device Safety
Clicker Downloads an App has been written for kids that love apps and screen time, as well as their caregivers, in an effort to help set good use guidelines.
Clicker loves going on vacation, as long as he has a Wi-Fi connection and some downtime. When Clicker tries to download a new app, his wise friend Digi asks if Clicker has permission to download. Clicker hasn’t asked for permission yet, but a safety screen asking for a password greets him. Taking a guess at what the password might be, Clicker successfully manages to download the app and prepares to play on his device until dawn. But when his screen breaks and his dad discovers that Clicker downloaded an app without permission, he gets grounded. Although it’s a tough lesson, Clicker learns that too much screen time distracts us from the things that really matter, like playing and having a great time with friends.
The story is short and gets straight to the point, ending with 2 important rules that all kids that use devices with access to the Internet and apps should learn:
- No apps unless a parent approves
- No downloading anything online unless a parent approves
The author has also included some helpful parent guidelines, too, encouraging adults to use the parental controls that are available to them.
If you’re a parent that hears the question “Can I download this new app?” on a regular basis, then this is a practical book that can be used to broach the subject of Internet and device safety, as well as overuse. Hopefully, by learning from Clicker’s mistakes, children will avoid making the same blunders.
