Children’s Adventure Story with Rare Theme
Dewi and the Seeds of Doom, a fast-paced, rambunctious adventure story written for reluctant readers aged six through eleven (elementary/middle-grade readers), is children’s fiction with a rare theme.
When Dewi is clobbered by a falling rat, the nosy Welsh dragon snoops his way into a challenging predicament. Helped by a toad with a passion for chemical wart cures, Dewi discovers that a megalomaniac baron is secretly breeding mutant corn at an unfriendly castle. To thwart the genetically modified-corn baron’s sickening plan, he must use moxie and firepower in a series of catastrophe-skirting capers.
What’s Unusual about That?
Author Maggie Lyons’s new children’s book, Dewi and the Seeds of Doom, has an underlying theme that is highly unusual in children’s fiction: the danger to your health of genetically modified food. Independent studies show that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) cause health problems including damage to internal organs. Although Americans have been eating GMOs since 1996, most consumers have no idea that about 80 percent of the processed food—and some produce—they buy at groceries contain GMOs. Research reveals that 90 percent of Americans would refuse to buy GMO products if they were labeled as such.
Equally Unusual
Welsh dragons are not your common-or-garden type of eat-little-kids-for-breakfast dragons. The Welsh red dragon is a symbol of national pride. Take a look at any Welsh national flat. The red dragon romps right in the center of it. Dewi, like any Welsh dragon, has a duty to do good deeds. And he discovers doing good needn’t be boring. It can, in fact, be downright thrilling—scary even, if you get into the kind of tight spots that amateur detectives can wind up in. The Welsh name for the red dragon is y ddraig goch—but you probably don’t want to know that.
Themes in the Book
Ask questions about everything, especially about things that don’t seem right. Ask about the food you eat. GMOs are dangerous to your health.

About the Author
Maggie Lyons was born in Wales and very properly brought up in England before gravitating to Virginia’s coast. She zigzagged her way through a motley slew of careers from (unofficial) British spy to academic editor. Writing and editing nonfiction for adults brought plenty of satisfaction over the years, but nothing like the magic she has recently discovered in writing for kids. She hopes to encourage reluctant readers to turn more than a page or two.
