What to Expect: Learning, magic, responsibility, kindness, and adventure.
In this latest addition to the Esme and Griswald series, the two friends learn a few more lessons about responsibility, duty, and the importance of thinking of others.
Esme and Griswald are in trouble again—they’ve been caught not paying attention in class, which means they have not learned the spells they should be learning to help others with. Just like the last time they got caught slacking, the Grand Witch gives them an ultimatum—deal with the Grumple upsetting a local village in three days’ time or be expelled for good. However, dealing with the Grumple turns into a thrilling three-day-long adventure in which they’ll encounter monsters, angry babies, snow blizzards, and dragons. How will they deal with all of these obstacles without any spells to help them? Well, trying hard, being kind, and not giving up will definitely help!
While readers will empathize with Esme and Griswald’s boredom with lessons and classrooms, they’ll also enjoy the colorful scrapes the two friends get themselves into. Notably, both characters are kind and thoughtful at heart, and it is through helping others that they learn the real value of their education, a lesson that will assist readers in putting their own frustrations with school in perspective. Colorful contemporary artwork helps bring the fun fantasy world of grumples, chatteras, and flying pigs to life. At the same time, the short chapters and simple language make the story accessible for readers new to chapter-book reading.
The Great Escape is entertaining for both existing fans of the series and new chapter book readers looking for a fun fantasy novel.
