What to Expect: Beach, family, independence, sharing, and creativity.
Sara and her family have visited the beach for the day, and Sara is excited to make her famous seaweed soup. It’s a big job—but Sara’s family are too busy to help her! Daddy is finding playlists, fixing fishing lines, and making sandwiches. Mommy is busy with Hallie, and Hallie is too little to help. Undeterred, Sara collects the water, gathers the seaweed, finds snails in the low-tide shallows, adds other smelly stuff to her pail, and stirs in the sand all by herself. Then, when the famous soup is just right and ready, Sara shares it with her family. Even though no one had time to help her make it, it still came out perfect!
Although family time is fun, sometimes family time means sharing an experience while still doing your own thing. As they share Sara’s soup-making experience, readers will learn that there is joy and pride to find in doing something all by yourself and then sharing it with others anyway. Bright and breezy watercolor illustrations evoke the sunshine and relaxation of the beach, as well as bringing Sara’s emotions and fun to life on the page, while simple, repetitive text helps make the story accessible to beginner readers.
Famous Seaweed Soup is a fun way to teach children about the balance between independence and shared experience.
