Marguerite Caine is the daughter of famous physicists who have made one of the world’s greatest discoveries – they created the Firebird, an instrument that allows travel between dimensions. Other than that, she’s pretty normal. She loves to paint, hang out with her sister and has a major crush on one of her parent’s students, Paul. He’s handsome, secretive and foreign. Though she doesn’t know much about his past, she feels drawn to him.
That is, until her father goes missing, and Paul is accused of his murder. But Paul has taken the Firebird device and fled this universe, leaving Marguerite to question anything she ever knew about him. But Marguerite is brave, and willing to try anything to make Paul pay – including hopping universes to find him.
What happens next is a fascinating and exciting adventure across multiple versions of our universe, including a version where Imperialist Russia still exists and Marguerite is a princess.
When Marguerite catches up with Paul, discovers a startling secret. The romance is ratcheted up, and she realizes that what brings her and Paul together, over and over again, is their intertwined destiny.
Then, in book two, a giant conspiracy against her parents is launched, where a villain masquerading as an investor wants their technology for profit, and her father dead. Can she and Paul keep her family safe while uncovering the true master plan? And when Paul is taken hostage, his soul split in a thousand pieces across the multiple universes, can Marguerite save him and save her family?
This is a fantastic series with mystery, action and pitch-perfect romance. It makes the reader question love and fate. Do we love who we love because of circumstance? Are there really soul mates, or are we just together by chance in this version of our reality? Gray is an immensely talented writer who blends action and mystery with these big-picture questions about the universe and our place within it. I really enjoyed her blend of real life science, including quantum mechanics and the multiple world interpretation (think many parallel universes) and breakneck-paced fiction. This was a perfect example of accessible and smart science fiction. Plus, Marguerite is feisty and charming, and her love for Paul is incredibly believable. The romantic notes of these books are unstoppable. Truly the best romance I’ve read in a long time.
I highly recommend this book for teens and adults. I can hardly wait to get my hands on book three of the series!
