What to Expect: Space, time travel, environmentalism, destiny, friendship
Girl Out of Time juxtaposes old-fashioned, rural, small-town America with the excitement of science fiction space travel for a novel that is both adventurous and completely down-to-earth.
Anna has always had her head in the stars. Since she was very little, she’s dreamed of launching herself into space. However, after her parents die in a car accident, it’s like her wings have been clipped. Grieving and cut adrift from her previous life, Anna feels space travel has become a distant, childish dream. Then, she’s sent to live with her Uncle Jack on his experimental farm, and everything changes. Mara—a time-traveler with anti-gravity boots and real space-travel abilities—turns up and promises to bring her dreams back to life again. But first, they’ll have to fix the holes in spacetime threatening to erase Mara from existence.
Like the best speculative fiction, the novel thinks about the fantastic not as just a path to adventure but also as solutions to the real-world problems that threaten us today, such as climate change and habitat loss. At the same time, it is a moving exploration of one girl’s journey to overcome loss and grief. Anna is intelligent, curious, and resilient, and readers will empathize with her quest to discover her role in this universe of wonders. The novel is filled with sensory detail that transports the reader to Anna’s world and invites appreciation of the reality we live in.
Girl Out of Time is a thought-provoking, intensely absorbing flight of fancy, perfect for every reader who dreams of flying further.
