Greta Grace: A Greta Grace Gibson Story About Bullying and Self-Esteem
Written by Joanna Quinn
Ages 9+ | 190 Pages
Publisher: Emerald Lake Books | ISBN-13: 9781945847448
What to Expect: Relationships, bullying, friendship, self-esteem.
Greta Grace just wants life in seventh grade to carry on as usual—same friends, same
routine, same challenges and triumphs. When her loving neighbor ends up in a coma and
she attracts the attention of Casey, the school bully, her world is turned upside down. As
Casey’s acts of aggression escalate and Mrs. McGee fails to wake up, Greta Grace’s days
become a never-ending nightmare of hospital visits, cyber-bullying, and fear. Not even
her growing friendship with her long-time crush is enough to make things feel better. Will
Greta Grace ever learn to see the good in a bad situation, the way her mom and Mrs.
McGee have taught her?
Learning to navigate complex relationships is one of the age-old challenges of
adolescence, which is why it is such a focus of middle-grade novels. While many do a
good job of depicting these challenges sympathetically, not as many succeed in modeling
potential solutions for readers. Greta Grace, through the words, actions, and thoughts of a
believable and engaging heroine, offers readers a new perspective on why people behave
the way they do and how it’s possible to avoid the drama without becoming a “weird kid”
or “loser.”
With enough action and suspense to make it a real page-turner, Greta Grace is
an enjoyable novel with some valuable lessons to teach.
