What to expect: Dogs and Humor
If I Were Human is a short and sweet picture book in which a dog wonders what it would be like to be human.
Brina, a small black Scottish terrier, observes Genevieve, a young blonde girl, engaging with a tablet device. Genevieve’s papa announces that Brina seems almost human. This leads Brina to ponder what it would be like to be a human. Brina decides that school would be the place to go—wearing a backpack, riding the yellow school bus, and using the swings and slide at recess. After school, Brina would have a snack, watch a little TV, and do homework. Brina asks dog pal Winnie to ponder the same question. Winnie would decidedly go to work in an office—wearing a tie, reading a newspaper while riding the train into the city, making important phone calls, doing presentations, and then falling asleep on the couch after dinner and a busy day. Other animals begin to chime in on what their own experiences would be like if they were human. Brina and Winnie end their day with their owners—games, treats, and relaxation—and decide that they would much rather just be dogs.
The idea of dogs going to school and to the office will surely earn a smile from young readers. Adults and children alike, especially dog lovers, will enjoy the simplicity of the story. The color illustrations add extra pizazz to the text with fun scenes like Winnie playing mini-golf in an office setting while making important calls with a headset on.
If I Were Human is a lighthearted yarn that might leave readers truly wondering what their pets are thinking about.
