Little Lucy, Big Race is a delightful book that shares a story of inspiration and perseverance with young readers. The story begins by introducing the hero – Lucy the dog – who is the smallest of her litter of puppies on a farm. As she grows up, she remains the smallest on the farm and feels sad and shy until she is reminded that she can “do anything you put your heart into.” She discovers that while she isn’t the biggest animal on the farm, she is one of the fastest, so she works hard to try to win the Big Dog Race.
Although the training is hard, her commitment pays off in the end. As Lucy tackles her exercises and works on her skills, she learns to persevere through rain and mud and injuries. She keeps going with encouragement from her friends. When the race begins, Lucy feels intimidated, but she finds her stride.
This endearing story has a wonderful message about hard work, and that the power that comes from believing in oneself is mighty. Little Lucy is a lovable and relatable character, and her outlook is positive, but also realistic.
Matt Roloff’s words throughout the book form a memorable rhyme for Lucy’s story, making each page a fun and engaging read for all ages. The upbeat message is a clear but uniquely told one of not letting size get in the way of chasing after a goal. The illustrations by Rick Marcks help little Lucy’s personality pop off the page, and they create a perfect backdrop for the happenings on the farm.
This story is a wonderful read for children and their adult readers, as it demonstrates that hard work can lead to positive outcomes. It will appeal to readers young and old who enjoy animals, rhyming books, and to those who are on the lookout for an inspirational story about not letting size be an obstacle.
