What to Expect: Environmentalism, sustainability, helping out, school, and nature.
We all have a responsibility to look after the environment, but it’s not hard to do when you know the simple, easy steps that everyone can take! Written in simple phrases with easy vocabulary, Off to School is a collection of three short and sweet rhymes: Off to School, At the Park, and On the Ocean. Each one is a good introduction for very young readers to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and nature.
Everyday life offers so many opportunities to care for the planet! As you brush your teeth, remember to check: have you turned the faucet off to save water? When you spill your milk at breakfast, why not use a reusable cloth instead of a paper towel to clean up the mess? If you love the greenery at the park, you can brighten up your gray city by planting a tree. And the cup and plastic bag you carried your lunch in on your boat ride? We can stop it from becoming a hazard to ocean creatures by not throwing it in the water!
The young protagonist is relatable as he engages in everyday tasks familiar to children everywhere, and bright, cheerful digital illustrations model the environmental behaviors taught in the text. By offering simple, specific, child-friendly suggestions for action, the text conveys the message that even very young readers can feel empowered about caring for the planet.
Overall, Off to School is a great introduction to environmentalism for very young readers.
