What to expect: Bike Riding, Perseverance
Princess Bing Bong is incredibly excited to learn to ride her brand new bike.“It had sparkly training wheels, purple racing stripes, and a glittery basket up front for her pet stuffed monkey Gibbles.” Like all good father’s, King Flapjack is ready to give her the first lesson. Feeling quite confident, Princess Big Bong receives a push from her dad on the bike path only to realize that she’s not quite sure what to do. Before she knows it she’s heading down a hill toward the farmer’s market where she crashes into a fruit stall. Determined not to land in a pile of fruit salad again, she resists lesson number two from dear old King Flapjack who puts in a good effort to encourage her not to give up and keep on trying. Lesson number two goes a lot better and soon she finds herself zooming along the bike path with no training wheels and even coming home with a big trophy after winning a race.
Vanessa Paniccaia has delivered a light and fun story. Children will delight in the creative names given to the characters and will enjoy championing Princess Bing Bong along. The imagery is colorful and provides a little extra push to the text.
Princess Bing Bong Rides a Bike is almost a precautionary tale, but mostly a lesson on persistence and never giving up. Children learning to ride a bike will enjoy it and those that have newly mastered the skills will whole-heartedly relate to the first inevitably wobbly moments that come from riding with no grown-up assistance or training wheels.
