What to Expect: Fairies, friendship, sharing, textile art.
Princess Pinecone and her four tiny friends enjoy spending time together—especially eating daisy pancakes for breakfast. One day, though, their breakfast plans are spoiled when they discover a little old man has eaten all their daisies. Despite the anger of four of her friends, Princess Pinecone decides to befriend the little old man. She is sad when her friends turn against her for her kindness. That’s when the strange lumps start appearing on their shoulders. Could the old man be behind this mystery? And will Princess Pinecone’s kindness be rewarded?
Princess Pinecone is a simple, classic, lovely fairy tale about the importance of empathy, friendship, and caring for others. Like many fairy tales, good and bad are clearly defined, leaving space for readers to question behaviors and motives and learn from the mistakes of the characters. What particularly makes this volume stand out, however, is the use of textile art as illustration. Each page of the story is beautifully worked in elaborate embroidery, including the text itself. The delicate stitches and rainbow colors are a perfect match for the narrative and a joy to look at in and of themselves. Together, the story and the illustrations make this a magical book indeed.
