Pug is happy in his home, but when a strange new friend comes to live with him, can he still find happiness?
Pug is busy. He has to bury his bones, bark at the neighbors and dig holes in the yard. He eats his yummy dinner and sleeps in his perfect dog house. Then, one fateful day, a new animal strolls out of the human’s house.
A teeny, tiny pig! And Pig thinks he and Pug should be friends. Pig follows him around while Pug is trying to work, and even plays with the cat instead of chasing it, much to Pug’s chagrin. Pug is exhausted and wants to take a nap, and, lo and behold, Pig has found Pug’s snuggly bed in his adorable dog house.
Well, Pug simply cannot stay. He packs his things (his bone, dog bowl and tennis ball) and gets ready to leave. Then a surprise new doggie door changes his mind. With the freedom of the dog door, he can come and go as he pleases. Hurray! But when Pig can’t fit the door, and he looks so sad, Pug decides to help make that doggy door into a piggy door. In the end, Pug and Pig are the best of friends and both very happy together at home.
PUT MEETS PIG is absolutely enchanting. The two would-be friends are more alike than Pug wants to admit. Both are roly-poly and curly-tailed, and both love to do the same things, much to Pug’s chagrin. But Pug learns a valuable lesson about friendship and sharing, which young readers will relate to and enjoy. The prose is perfectly simple and a bit lyrical for a picture book. It blends nicely with the colorful and sweet illustrations of the two animals. Children will enjoy Pug’s wiggly tail and Pig’s smiling face. An uplifting and lighthearted story about friendship and realizing that maybe a new friend is not so different after all.
