What to expect: Working Together, Playful Words and Language
Sew What? is an illustrated picture book that showcases the enjoyment that can come from working together. Filled with plenty of one-syllable words, it is ideal for beginner readers. Author Glen A. Penrod has dedicated the book to children everywhere that are ready to unlock the power and wonder of reading.
As a girl begins to sew with her needle and thread, and a boy begins to saw a ship from wood, a fun play on words arises between spelling and meaning: see vs. sea, sew vs. so, saw vs. saw. As the girl continues to sew a blue sheet and the boy’s wooden ship takes shape, the two projects seem singular but when combined create a collaborative and enjoyable ending to the tale.
Penrod’s easy text has great cadence and repetitive phrasing that nudges readers along through each short sentence. Sew What? also encourages readers to consider word tense. The boy and girl are illustrated in an adorable anime style and they, along with their big eyes, take center stage against the simple white background. The white space also allows for the bold black text to stand out easily, and the large size of the text is another bonus for beginner readers.
Well-suited for beginner and emerging readers in kindergarten through second grade, this is a book that would be a perfect fit at home, on a classroom bookshelf or in the book bag of any young learner. A book that is fun and also engages the brain is a winner in our eyes.
