What to Expect: Getting lost, loneliness, problem-solving, positive thinking, and diversity.
In this fun and gentle take on the classic tortoise and hare story, readers learn that different ways of doing things are not necessarily wrong.
When Sinclair the Turtle and Sophia the Rabbit’s friends are too busy to play with them, they decide to have some fun in a hay maze. However, things don’t go as planned. Sophia wants to speed ahead. Sinclair intends to take his time. Grumpy and frustrated with each other, the two friends go different ways and soon get lost.
Two mice and a mole offer their help, but Sinclair and Sophia still can’t find each other—or the way out of the maze! Then, Sophia has an idea—she’ll try pausing and thinking, like Sinclair would. And Sinclair has an idea—he’ll keep moving until he finds the way out, just like Sophia would! By celebrating each other’s differences, the two friends soon find their way out and back to each other.
Readers will easily empathize with the two bickering friends and their fear and frustration at getting lost. Like the best fables, the story ends happily and with an important lesson—sometimes, we need to see through someone else’s eyes to solve a problem. Softly colored ink and watercolor illustrations breathe life into the serene farm and countryside, vividly portraying its charming animal inhabitants. The text is longer in form than a typical picture book, perfect for more advanced readers, while text effects, sound words, and repetition help less advanced readers interpret the text easily.
Sophia and Sinclair Get Lost! is a lovely story with an important message for young readers.
