What to Expect: Natural history, feminism, eco-awareness
In preparation to be her hive’s Queen Bee, Princess Debee is learning about the many jobs that the bees do to keep their hive running and producing the delicious honey they all need to live. One day the workers stop being able to make honey altogether: it’s just too hot to fly. To save her hive, and even though she’s afraid of flying alone, Princess Debee decides to fly to the meadow at night and gather the nectar they need herself. But will she be safe from the huge, five-fingered, honeycomb destroyer, the strange brown rain that kills the flowers, and the vicious honey badgers?
On her journey, Debee learns that while not everything may be quite as you would expect it on an adventure, everything works out fine when we all work together to help one another.
Bees are essential to our way of life, supporting crops and gardens across the globe as they pollinate plants and produce honey. However, human activities such as monoculture farming, global warming, and pesticide use have been threatening the health of hives everywhere, damaging the bees’ food supplies and disturbing the delicate balance they live in. By creating a family of brave, resourceful, and utterly endearing bee characters, Yoel Silber not only brings these threats into focus but also teaches important lessons about courage, working together, and overcoming differences.
Bright, colorful illustrations lend a fairy tale quality to the story, and Princess Debee’s plucky actions remind readers that even someone very small can make a huge difference.
The Amazing Bees: A Children’s Theatrical Experience is not just an education about bees—it’s a fun, action-packed fairytale young readers are sure to enjoy.
