What to expect: Bees, Pollination, Friendship
In “The Bees Are Gone” author Jim Wohlbach explains the collapse of the bee population and the consequences that the disappearance of the bees will have on our existence. The story follows the travails of Bonnie, a blue flower, who fears that unless the bees return and pollinate her, her seeds won’t be able to grow next year.
“Without bees to pollinate me…my babies won’t be able to bloom in the spring!”
Bonnie, along with her friend Butterfly, meet several characters that explain that without pollination, there won’t be fruits or chocolate or vanilla or cotton for clothes or herbs for medicines, to name just a few of the crops that will be affected by the disappearing bees.
Bonnie sets off to find the missing bees and encounters a scenario that she had not expected. An evil king and an army of robots have deliberately spread harmful chemicals that have caused the bees to lose their way home. With the help of a good robot, Bonnie may be able to reverse the damage that has been done.
According to the introduction to “The Bees Are Gone,” bees have been disappearing at an alarming rate since 2006 and the book aims to shed some light on this situation as well as the importance and interconnectedness of the bees to our everyday lives. The illustrations skillfully convey the pressing concerns that Bonnie and her friends come to realize and the text is easy to follow and appropriate for children ages five to seven.
