The Children’s Book Review | July 18, 2018
Based on two popular offerings from Thames and Hudston, The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Beasts, these two fun activity books allow readers to engage even further with natural history through interactive activities and pages of realistic, reusable stickers.
There are plenty of interactive activity books on the market for children, but what stands out about The Big Book of Bugs and The Big Book of Beasts is the amount of careful planning and thought that have gone into the design. The stickers themselves, for example, have clear acrylic backgrounds, making them not only easy to peel off the backing sheets, but also helping them to blend almost invisibly with the backgrounds and scenery when placed on the page. The illustration for both the stickers and the pages themselves are beautiful – cartoon-like and yet realistic enough to allow readers to recognize key distinguishing features of the different animals and insects. The activities themselves are well thought-out, from interactive drawing suggestions (“Draw more wood on the beavers’ home”) to imaginative exercises (“Design your own honey jar label”) which challenge readers to not just memorize facts, but to think critically about what they are learning. Best of all, the stickers are reusable! (And that means: easy to remove from the fridge, the floor, the cat, etc., etc…). Two wonderfully enjoyable books perfect for the classroom or at home.
