“Your life will never be the same again, Alyssa McCarthy, as magic will interfere.”
And so begins the first middle grade novel in a planned series of seven books.
Blonde, twelve-year-old Alyssa was orphaned five years ago after her parents died tragically in a car accident. Since then, she has lived with her harsh Uncle Bruce and her kind eleven-year-old redheaded cousin Hailey. When a message written in inky raindrops magically appears on the kitchen window, stating that her life will never be the same again, Alyssa begins to wonder: why magic now? Why doesn’t anyone else believe that magic exists? Who is responsible for making Mrs. Hutchins, the firm and bossy sitter, fall asleep to spray paint her hair and draw on her face? Since nobody else seems to believe in magic, Alyssa and Hailey are forced to take the blame. Simon, a magical marble figure, makes himself known and lets Alyssa know that an evil sorcerer who goes by the name of Master Beau Duchamp is coming for her. The pair has a connection that will allow his powers to strengthen, if only he can get her to the islands of Fiji.
Suspense and mystery build as the author keenly develops the story and keeps readers turning the pages by dropping nuggets of information bit-by-bit. Using creative verbal imagery and plenty of dialogue, the world built is one of fantasy and intrigue, including fascinating yet familiar technology and magical beasts. “She saw a creature the size of a horse. It had a head, wings, and front legs of a rainbow lorikeet. The back half of its body, however, had the tail and legs of a kangaroo.”
A kidnapping, a banished sorcerer, and the protagonist’s desire to be loved and find a place to call home make this an exciting and action-filled story that will very likely appeal to fans of the fantasy genre.
