The Rootlets: Super Rootabilities is the first book in a healthy-eating-meets-superhero-action early reader series. The series is written by certified health coach, wellness expert, and plant-based chef Vicki Marquez.
The Rootlets—Brocc, Carotina, Cornelius and Kaley—are a bunch of young vegetables living in Veggie Ville on Planet Planted—a magical plant-based planet—with their guardian, Yammy Gammy, and their dog, Basil. Yammy Gammy picked the quartet from the ground when they were tiny sprouts. The Rootlets are excited to see Planet Earth rising, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, when they overhear Mr. Fungi telling Yammy Gammy about the legend of a select few who will receive “super magical powers”—Rootabilities—the day Planet Earth rises. Amid the panic and emotion that ensues, their telescope gets damaged. Will the Rootlets be able to see the “Earthrise?” Who will be the select few to receive a “Rootability?” What are these special powers?
Through her story of The Rootlets, Marquez has created a cool vessel for teaching kids about the benefits of eating vegetables: good eyesight, glowing skin, strength, and brain health. The text is energetic and the plant-based humor is amusing. “Give Mr. Fungi time and he’ll grow on you.” The text size is large and bold, creating an ideal reading experience for newly independent readers. Jeremy Russnak’s topnotch cartoon illustrations add movement and vibrancy to the pages. At times they have a Mary Blair, of Disney fame, quality about them.
With their fun veggie hair and bubbly personalities, The Rootlets: Super Rootabilities is sure to appeal to kids with many interests: foodies, superhero fans, science lovers, and budding gardeners, to name a few. Readers will quickly grasp the author’s message that healthy living is anything but boring! Kids will gobble up this fun little book. Yes, this story is a dish!
