This beautifully illustrated book is perfect for introducing the concept of family, however they begin.
Hattie Peck is a chicken who loves eggs more than anything. But Hattie only had one egg, and it never hatched. She sets off on an adventure around the globe to look for all of the Earth’s forgotten eggs. She flies over vibrant cities. She swims to the depths of the ocean. She goes spelunking in deep dark caves, all for the sake of finding abandoned eggs to make her very own. And Hattie is lucky – she finds all sorts of eggs, big and small, to rescue. Sitting on so many eggs is a hard job, but Hattie is happy to do it. Then, surprise! Out pop dozens of new babies of every species, ready to be loved by Hattie Peck. This very special chicken gets her wish after all.
The narrative and word choice are perfectly balanced for little ones. No words are too big, but there is enough challenge for even more advanced readers. The illustrations are vibrant and engaging. Children will love to point out the different destinations of Hattie Peck, and help her find the egg on the page. Best of all, Hattie has the sweet well-deserved ending everyone can appreciate. This is a great story for adoptive families or those struggling with infertility. Hattie Peck proves that there is more than enough love to go around, and any way to make a family is a great one.
Highly recommended for preschoolers and kindergartners.
