The Children’s Book Review | September 28, 2016
Children have the cutest, tiniest fingers. Why not put them to good use? These two adorable board books feature interactive holes on each page so that an adult (or a willing kiddo!) can put their wiggling fingers in to join the fun.
I Can Dance
Written and Illustrated by Betsy Snyder
I CAN DANCE is full of fun dancing surprises. The illustrations of adorable, ethnically diverse children doing all sorts of dance moves is really engaging for little readers. There’s a little girl doing classical ballet, a disco dancer and a hip tap dancer. Wiggle those fingers to the beat while you read the cute rhyming prose. There is an added benefit for talking about the different types of dance – kids might be familiar with ballet, but what about hip hop? Tap? Adults can ask the children what kind of dance move they’d like to try, and act it out with the interactive finger holes. Adorable!

I Can Play
Written and Illustrated by Betsy Snyder
I CAN PLAY is a bit more rough and tumble, featuring a diverse cast of children running, playing soccer and more. Get those pretend feet moving and wiggle your fingers while reading the fun rhymes. Who knew snowboarding could be so cute?

Both of these books are great for infants through toddlers. Children will identify with at least one character in the book, whether through the activity they are participating in or through what they look like. I appreciated the ethnic diversity in the cast of kids, as well as the diversity in activities they participated in. Dancing isn’t just for girls, and sports aren’t just for boys! The illustrations are cute and take full advantage of the interactive nature of the finger holes, and each cover is touch-and-feel. Highly recommended for all babies and toddlers.
