Everyone today seems to be obsessed with celebrities: what they wear, where they live, who they love, what they do. Too frequently celebrities make poor role-models, promoting lifestyles that are unhealthy, directionless, or self-centered. However, celebrities just as often have inspirational stories and skills which are overlooked in the media-storm of bad publicity, and the first two installments in the What Can I Learn From series by Moppet books – What Can I Learn from the Incredible and Fantastic Life of Oprah Winfrey and What Can I Learn from the Incredible and Fantastic Life of Steve Jobs – highlights this in a positive and motivational way.
Combining colorful, cartoon-style illustration with playful fonts, this series makes the biographical information of celebrities, such as Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs, fun and accessible. It not only provides the story of each individual’s life, but also includes inspirational quotes that draw attention away from celebrity for celebrity’s sake, and highlight the fact that to earn fame it is necessary to work hard and motivate yourself. The series also has a further stated goal of encouraging “diversity, determination, and individuality”, and both of these first offerings hold true to this promise. Each volume ends with suggestions for the reader to set their own goals and life-path, as well as with a further reading list. Fun to read purely for entertainment, these books would also be wonderful as the focus for classroom projects and activities.
