What to Expect: Rhyme, Mischief, Adventure, and Imaginative Play
Through rich language, repetitive refrains, and shrewd storytelling, Dan Seif’s picture book, We’re Going on an Adventure, captures the imagination of two resourceful heroes.
The queen lowers the gates and the dynamic duo start their journey with great determination. The pair navigates with perseverance through treacherous grounds—supporting each other through play and peril. Lively and colorful illustrations plot their course through enchanted lands as they trudge through a mallowed marsh, a fearsome forest, frigid flats, and a roasting ridge, working together to battle a mighty beast with razor claws. When the children return to their queen, one of the girls has a scratch. It is here that the reader realizes that the queen is in fact Mom, who is angered and unsurprised that such an injury would occur from tormenting a cat, signaling just what wild imaginations these kids have.
It’s fantastic when a book reminds young readers of the power of imagination and adventure, as well as the joy that can come from playing outside with a friend or sibling. We’re Going on an Adventure will entertain those that love to live on the edge and are not afraid to wield a stick for a sword during their daring escapades.
