What to Expect: Friendship, problem-solving, positive thinking.
In this beautiful picture book, hands become a metaphor for the diversity of people in the world and the myriad ways they are connected by love, community, and shared support.
Raniya wants to know: what makes hands beautiful? Her mother has lots of advice for her. She explains that there are all kinds of beautiful hands, from the hands that sew clothes to the hands that grow gardens, fix cars, paint, and help people heal. Some of those hands are dark, and some are light; some are wrinkled; some are calloused; some are soft; some are scarred. Most importantly, Raniya’s mother explains that what makes all of those hands beautiful is that they reach out to help others—they are beautiful because they give and hold love!
What Makes Hands Beautiful is not just a story about caring for others, but a celebration of our unique differences. This message is beautifully underscored by vibrant anime-style artwork, depicting people of various ages, races, cultures, professions, and interests, all helping one another. This book inspires readers to look beyond external differences and appreciate the common humanity we all share.
A perfect starting point for meaningful discussions with young readers, What Makes Hands Beautiful is a simple, elegant story.
