What to Expect: Car safety, distraction, choices.
Busy twenty-first-century lifestyles mean that multitasking has become normalized, despite the dangers that come with distractibility. Asher’s Distracted Lesson is an instructive tale about resisting the lure of too many choices and how being present and in the moment supports safety for everyone.
There are so many things Asher wants to do – how can he pick just one thing at a time? Unable to choose between his favorite things, Asher tries to do all the things at once – eating, playing, reading, and even gluing things all at the same time!
Then, one day, Asher and his family get in the car for a trip to the park when—BAM! A bump from behind means their plans for sunshine, treats, and games are replaced by talks with police officers, visits to the doctor, and anxiety. It’s all because the driver behind them wanted to do two things at once—driving and texting on his phone. Asher learns an important lesson – you can’t do more than one thing at a time and still be safe!
By focusing on emotions like excitement and fear, Bello makes Asher an easy character to relate to, while simple rhyming text keeps the lesson accessible for beginner readers. Colorful digital illustrations depict the chaos that ensues from indecisiveness, underscoring the main message in the text.
What Should I Do—One Thing or Two? Asher’s Distracted Lesson is a great addition to any collection of road and safety instructional stories.
