What to Expect: Space, family, siblings, and imagination.
In this fun and whimsical tale, real life blends seamlessly with imagination as the reader is shown a picture of space incorporating science, nursery rhyme, popular culture, and child’s-eye perspective.
Baby is just sitting in his highchair, minding his business, when WHOOSH! The tree branch his sister has tied his chair to for safety gives way, propelling him into space! There’s a lot to see in space, but not all of it makes sense. From a bird that seems to be made all of metal to dancing astronauts, chummy aliens, and even a cow, dish, and spoon. And what is a bear made all out of dots of light doing up there? No matter how strange things seem, one thing is clear—Baby loves space, and space loves Baby!
The result is both magical and instructive, helping readers see how factual and poetic imaginings of space may relate to one another. The story is told through simple, short bursts of rhyming text, which is great for reading aloud or beginner readers. The brightly colored cartoon-like illustrations add to the whimsy of the story, putting comical expressions on the faces of the moon and planets and adding humorous silent interactions between the characters.
When I Was a Baby, I Went Up to Space is a fun and lighthearted read, making it a lovely choice for bedtime reading.
